Treatments for sports injuries

The moment you limp off, a clock starts. What happens in the first forty-eight hours — and the six weeks after — decides whether you return stronger or collect the same injury twice. Sports injury care is not a single treatment; it is a sequence, and skipping steps is how seasons are lost.

Phase one is protection without panic: relative rest, compression, elevation and an early assessment that grades the damage. Most sprains and strains do not need a scan — they need a trained pair of hands, a clear diagnosis and permission to move safely sooner than you expect.

The treatment ladder we climb

  • Manual therapy first — joint mobilisation and soft-tissue release restore pain-free range so rehab has something to build on.
  • Progressive loading — isometrics, then eccentrics, then explosive drills, each unlocked by tests rather than the calendar.
  • Sport-specific rehearsal — cutting, landing, throwing and contact rebuilt in the clinic before they are risked on the field.
  • Return-to-play testing — strength symmetry, hop tests and confidence scores that give coaches and athletes a shared green light.
  • Injury-proofing — the unglamorous prevention programme (Nordics, balance, load management) that stops the sequel.

Overuse injuries — runner's knee, tennis elbow, shin splints — follow a different logic. There is rarely one traumatic moment; instead, load quietly outgrew capacity. Treatment means finding the spike (new shoes? new mileage? new surface?) and rebuilding tolerance deliberately, not just resting until it feels better and repeating the cycle.

What athletes get wrong

Two mistakes dominate our sports caseload: returning the week pain fades (pain leaves before strength returns) and training through swelling that keeps coming back. Our rule is simple — pain guides, but tests decide. When your hop symmetry, strength numbers and movement quality clear their thresholds, you play. Until then, you train the parts that are ready.

Suspect something needs grading? Our ankle therapy and shoulder therapy pages show exactly how sport-related joints are assessed and rebuilt.
